Plantation and Gardening Programme

Objectives of the Practice

  • To ensure more plantation of different useful medicinal plants & trees.
  • To enable the students to understand the significance of plantation and encourage them to appreciate the same.
  • To ensure effective implementation of Telangana Government’s flagship programme- “Harithahaaram”.
  • To enhance the aesthetic appeal of the institution.
  • To establish a cool and eco-friendly campus
  • To facilitate decomposition of the waste and to use it for manure purpose.

The Context

Plantation programme can be considered as one of the most engaging, environmentally friendly activity.  Our college is located in heart of the city, and is often subjected to vehicular and noise pollution.  We are indeed fortunate as we have considerably good amount of open land available.  Therefore, the Department of Botany has resolved to take up the plantation programme in a strategic manner to enhance the quality of the environment and also the aesthetic appeal.

The Practice

  • The Department of Botany was established in the year 2018.
  • Annually the Telangana Government’s flagship programme is carried out in the college in the month of July, during which many social forestry trees and ornamental plants are planted.
  • The Department further encourages the staff and students to donate a plant on their birthday’s and proposes to develop a “Birthday Garden”
  • The plants of the institution are listed, identified and numbered.
  • A detailed account of the scientific details and the benefits of the plants available in the campus is prepared and maintained.
  • QR Coding of the plants is taken up, to facilitate easy identification of the plants.
  • Medicinal plants are planted and their medicinal uses are listed.
  • The Department in collaboration with the Ecoclub encouraged the students to dig a compost pit to facilitate the development of indigenous manure.
  • The department further proposes to develop a “Herbarium” to maintain the repository of the plants and to facilitate the identification of the plants.

Evidence of Success:

  • As many as 238 plants have been planted during the Harithahaaram programs carried out between 2018-21
  • Planted around 33 Medicinal plants.
  • Students participated enthusiastically in large numbers.
  • Annually eminent personality is invited to the plantation programs to motivate the students.

Problems encountered and resources required:

    • Maintenance of the plants is often expensive as it needs regular changing of soil and the addition of nutrients.
    • It is challenging to protect the flowers and ornamental plants from theft or injury.
    • The construction process taken up for the expansion of the campus is causing severe, unavoidable damage to the plants.
    • It sometimes becomes difficult to motivate the students to participate in the plantation programme due to academic pressure.
