TheDepartment of English was established in the year 1966 providing the two year General English Course to the undergraduate BA courses affiliated to Osmania University in the year wise Scheme(YWS) with Telugu as the medium of instruction. In the year 1996, B.Com and in 2002, BSC(MSCs) were introduced in the year wise scheme and the Department‘s General English curriculum catered to the needs of both Telugu and English medium undergraduate programs. In 2005, JKCs were established across the GDCs and the Department of English trained students in the 100 hour curriculum on Communication Skills and Soft Skills to enhance their employability skills. The formation of Telangana State in 2014 saw a sea change in curriculum and material development to meet the 21st century needs of the undergraduate learners in Telangana. CBCS was introduced by Osmania University in 2016-17 and the General English course was offered for 20 credits across semesters I to IV. From 2019-2020, the General English course is being offered across the VI semesters of the UG programs for 20 credits. The Department offers a 2 credit Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) in Semester III for all the UG programs. The Department also offers a Bridge Course and Certificate Course every academic year. The Department’s MoUs with NGOs inculcates social etiquette, leadership skills, gender parity and interpersonal skills among students and annual Field Trips are integrated to scaffold the curriculum. The faculty of the Departmentare actively involved in developing and designing curriculum, textbooks, and assessments. The faculty are certified Teacher Trainers and are actively involved in teacher training across the State in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).

To develop Language and Communication Skills in English among the heterogeneous undergraduate learners, and instil in the students the value for gender parity and community engagement.

MISSION

    • To strengthen grammar, vocabulary and the LSRW skills in English.
    • To enhance students’ Soft Skills, Employability Skills and Human Values.
    • To encourage learners to appreciate the various genres of English Literature.
    • To  develop gender sensitivity among the students ‘
    • To impart among students the need for community service through outreach programmes.

BEST PRACTICES

Best Practice -1 Student-Centric Learning through Extension Activities

Objectives:

  1. To inculcate 21st century skills among the students  namely the 4 C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and culture)

Context:Student- Centered teaching/learning is practiced in the English classrooms by the faculty trained in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) using course books, designed to practice learner’s centered methodology. To scaffold and provide opportunities for the students to involve themselves in language learning several extension activities are conducted with our NGO partners , Ruberoo, Taruni, Prajwala&Pravaha.
Practice:

  1. Workshops and Certificate Courses: The Department conducts activity based workshops on Communication Skills every year and conducts a Certificate Course to enhance the LSRW Skills of the learners.
  2.  Field Trips: The Department of English organizes a field trip every  January  to the prestigious international event namely, Hyderabad Literary Festival. The three-day festival help students participate in varied programs: conversation with authors. Readings, panel discussions, workshops, screenings, stage talks, exhibitions, book launches, cultural programs, art exhibitions, musical evenings… with the objective to involve students in the literary, cultural and artistic ethos of the world.
  3. Volunteering: The Department encourages volunteering among students for academic and social causes to enable and empower them by developing  leadership qualities, team skills Inter and Intra personal Skills.

Success of the Practice:

  1. Students develop communication skills, Social Skills and Leadership skills.
  2. The exposure and experiences enable students to gain new perspectives and transform themselves into confident young men and women.
  3. Involvement in extension activities ensures capacity building of the students.

Challenges:

  1. The lack of allocation of extra credits for extension activities discourages students from participating in large numbers

Best Practice -2 Teacher/Student Training Programs in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Student –Centered Learning (SCL) by the Faculty of the Department of English

 

Objectives:

  1. To train undergraduate teachers in student-centered teaching learning methodology.
  2. To train undergraduate learners in student- centered learning methodologies to strengthen their communication skills and critical thinking.

Context:
The 21stCentury world requires the undergraduate students to be competent with diverse skills like collaboration, creativity, problem solving and communication skills. The undergraduate teachers need to update their skills and equip themselves to meet the requirements of their learners. Faculty Development Programs are vital to enabling teachers meet the demands of the 21st Century Classrooms. The Faculty of the Department of English are certified Teacher Trainers and conduct training programs for teachers and students at regular intervals across the State in various Institutions.

Practice:The Department of English as part of  Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR)  coordinates with various Institutions and tailor training programs  for teachers/students based on the Institutions/Organisation requirementsin Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Student –Centered Learning (SCL)
Success of the Practice:
The Faculty of Department of English have conducted several teacher/student training programs for prestigious Institutions like IIIT Basra, Cuddapah, Nuzwid, CCE Government of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS), GDC (W) Begumpet, and for counselors of NGO PRAJWALA and were successful in parting the objective of the training programmes.

Challenges:

    • The constraints of balancing our roles as teachers of English in the college and the demands of being certified teacher trainers.
