Best Practices

Untitled Document

Facilitating Student Progression by fostering Mathematical Aptitude

The objectives of the practice:

  • To develop the qualities of independent thinking and problem-solving.
  • To acquaint the students with various fields associated with mathematics.
  • To help students identify and solve current issues and challenges in the area of Mathematics.
  • To train the students to acquire practical knowledge for solving problems encountered in personal and professional life.
  • To prepare the students for competitive exams and ensure their overall development.

The Context
The Department of Mathematics was founded in 1976. It started with traditional course B. A (MES) in Telugu medium. The department was established to help students overcome their stigma for mathematics and to enable them to understand and implement elementary concepts in day-to-day life.

Practices

  • PG Entrance coaching
  • Student study projects
  • Group Discussions
  • Celebration of National Mathematics day
  • Celebration of Science day
  • Student seminars
  • Teaching Video lessons
  • Certificate courses
  • Assignments
  • Students' participation in inter-collegiate competitions

Evidence of Success

  • Students could gain clarity on basic concepts and overcome their fear of the subject.
  • Students could build confidence and could get a better insight into the concepts.
  • Students successfully gave seminars that helped them overcome their phobia of presentation.
  • Students were made aware of higher education opportunities in reputed institutions and were motivated to enrol in them.
  • Students could appreciate the contributions of eminent personalities in the field of Mathematics by celebrating their birthdays.

Problems encountered and resources required:

  1. Preparing students without the basic aptitude to appear for competitive examinations is challenging.
  2. It's difficult to inculcate research aptitude in students.
